What makes EMDR different?
You don’t have to retell everything. You don’t have to relive every detail. You don’t have to reopen wounds to heal them. Your brain already knows how to heal; it just needs the proper process to finally let go of what’s been trapped for far too long.
EMDR therapy in Vaughan and Newmarket helps release the emotional charge around old memories, so they lose their power. Their grip weakens. Your nervous system softens. And slowly, beautifully, you start feeling like yourself again. Calmer. More grounded. More present. More you.
Picture this:
You wake up without pressure on your chest. You move through your day without stomach tension. You breathe without waiting for the next trigger.
That’s what EMDR can unlock. This isn’t about forgetting. This is about FREEDOM. Freedom from old pain. Freedom from old stories. Freedom from the moments that tried to define you. You do not have to walk this path alone. You’ll be supported.
You’ll be safe.
And we’ll go at your pace, always.

How Does EMDR Therapy Actually Work?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It was developed by psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s and has since become one of the most extensively researched trauma therapies in the world. It is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and recognized by Health Canada as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD.
Here is the core idea: when something traumatic happens, the memory can get “stuck” in the nervous system — stored with all the original emotion, sensation, and belief attached to it. Every time something reminds you of that event, your brain responds as though it is happening right now. That is why trauma can feel so present, so relentless, even years later.
EMDR works by activating the brain’s natural information processing system using bilateral stimulation — typically side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or sound. While your brain is in this gently activated state, you briefly focus on a distressing memory. The bilateral stimulation allows the brain to reprocess that memory, loosening its emotional charge, and filing it away as something that happened in the past — not something still happening now.
You stay in control throughout the entire process. You are always in the room, always with your therapist, always safe.
What Conditions Does EMDR Help With?
EMDR was originally developed for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but research has expanded its application considerably. At Connections First Therapy, our EMDR therapists in Vaughan and Newmarket use it to help clients with:
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) — including single-incident trauma and complex, repeated trauma
- Childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences — neglect, emotional, physical, or sexual abuse
- Anxiety and panic disorders — particularly where a specific event or pattern is at the root
- Grief and loss — especially when grief feels complicated or frozen
- Low self-worth and shame — often rooted in early experiences that shaped how you see yourself
- Relationship trauma — betrayal, infidelity, emotional abuse
- Addictions — where underlying trauma is driving compulsive behaviour
If you are not sure whether EMDR is right for your situation, that is exactly what a free consultation is for. We will listen and help you understand what approach fits best.
How Many EMDR Sessions Will I Need?
This is one of the most common questions we hear. The honest answer is that it depends on your history and goals.
For a single, specific traumatic event — such as a car accident or a one-time assault — research suggests that significant relief is often possible within 6 to 12 sessions. For complex or repeated trauma that began in childhood, the process typically takes longer, because there are more layers to work through.
What we can tell you is this: most clients notice a meaningful shift earlier than they expect. EMDR tends to move faster than traditional talk therapy for trauma, because it works directly with how the memory is stored — not just how you think about it.
Your therapist will discuss a realistic timeline with you during your free consultation.
Is EMDR Available Online?
Yes. We offer EMDR therapy online throughout Ontario, in addition to in-person sessions at our Vaughan and Newmarket locations. Online EMDR is effective and uses the same evidence-based approach — bilateral stimulation is adapted for video sessions using on-screen visual prompts or audio tones.
